Disability and Learner Support

The Disability & Learner Support Service supports students throughout their studies. Specialist Disability Advisors make sure students have the assistance they need in lectures and exams through the provision of an individual Student Support Plan, which are created during a one-to-one discussion with each student. The plan is then sent to key university staff requesting reasonable adjustments. Students can opt for information about their condition or difficulties to remain confidential if they wish, this is then not included in the support plan when we request staff to make reasonable adjustments.

Reasonable adjustments aim to provide equal access for disabled students in lectures, practical and laboratory situations, as well as on placement and in exams and assessment. Examples include asking for lecture notes in advance (these may be posted on the online learning platform), allowing students to record lectures, providing support to a student to catch up if they have missed lectures for disability-related reasons, extra time in exams, a separate room with other students in exams to help concentration.

Disability & Learner Support also provides equipment loans, mainly digital voice recorders for lectures.  Our Advisers also help students apply for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA) funding, the main source of external funding for disabled students in higher education.

On the Disability & Learner Support website there are links to disability-specific information and a series of guides providing information and the answers to frequently asked questions about studying as a disabled student at Salford.

We work closely with other University Services such as Wellbeing, Financial Advisers, Hardship fund Staff, the Students Union Academic Advisers and the Medical Centre as well as with academic staff and school offices.
