Students Union

The Students’ Union Advice Service is committed to providing a confidential advice service that meets the needs of all University of Manchester students, we provide an impartial and independent source of information, advice and advocacy for all current students, but also extend our service to prospective students and graduates where appropriate.

Welfare

The Advice Service recognises that students may encounter difficulties within their personal lives whilst at university and can offer advice with regards to sexual health, bullying, discrimination and harassment or just an ear to listen if students are feeling homesick or need to talk through worries in a confidential space completely independent from the University. In addition to advice, we also provide free condoms, panic alarms and pregnancy tests and sell Mooncups.

The Advice Service recognises that there are cases that require more advice, information or support than we are able to provide, however, if we are unable to advise a student, we can refer and/or signpost them to other agencies that will be able to help them, so feel confident to contact our service.

Academic

We advise students on a wide range of academic issues, including course / university transfers, appeals, complaints, mitigating circumstances and disciplinary hearings. We can advise students regarding the various procedures, comment on appeal and complaint submissions and also help to prepare for and attend disciplinary hearings and university meetings with students.

Finance

Students can contact us about financial issues they may have. We can advise on issues with Student Finance; assisting them with appeals and complaints with the Student Loans Company and can provide information on postgraduate funding sources and how to find out about funding from charities and trusts. We can also advise students regarding financial support from The University of Manchester Student's Union and The University of Manchester in terms of emergency loans and hardship grants. Few students are entitled to benefits, but we also advise students regarding these and we provide HC1 Forms that students can complete to see if they can get funding towards NHS costs.

Housing

We advise students with housing issues relating to both The University of Manchester and private accommodation. We provide a tenancy contract checking service and general renting advice regarding deposits, guarantors and inventories. Students can contact us if they are having problems with the property, their landlord, fellow tenants or neighbours. We have links with other housing organisations so we can provide accurate information regarding their legal rights.
